The Neighborhoods

West Tokyo

West Tokyo, to me, means the neighborhoods along the Chuo Line: Kichijoji, Koenji, Nakano, Ogikubo, and Asagaya. Each one has its own personality, and none of them needs a packed itinerary. Pick one, get off the train, and walk.

Harmonica Yokocho in Kichijoji at dusk — a narrow alley of tiny bars glowing with red paper lanterns

Kichijoji

The one I’m in a couple of times a week, and the easiest sell out here: park, shopping streets, and tiny-bar alleys all in one walk.

Start with: Inokashira Park and Benzaiten Shrine → Harmonica Yokocho after dark.

A vintage clothing storefront on Koenji’s Look Shotengai, racks of second-hand clothes under a green-striped awning

Koenji

I lived in Koenji for two years, so this one’s personal. It’s Tokyo’s vintage and underground stop: around 70 second-hand shops, record stores, live houses — and a shrine where people pray about the weather.

Start with: The Look Shotengai vintage run → Kosugiyu sento (any day but Thursday — it’s closed Thursdays).

Explore Koenji →
Inside Nakano Broadway — glass display cases packed with collectible figures at a showcase shop

Nakano

Retro Tokyo under one roof: Nakano Broadway’s maze of collectibles, vintage watches, and Mandarake shops.

Start with: Sun Mall into Broadway, floor by floor → Daily Chiko’s 8-layer soft serve.

Explore Nakano →
A steaming bowl of chuka soba at Harukiya, the Ogikubo ramen shop going since 1949

Ogikubo

The ramen stop: a proper ramen town anchored by Harukiya, going since 1949 — with Otaguro Park when you need a breather.

Start with: A bowl at Harukiya → Otaguro Park.

Explore Ogikubo →
The counter of a tiny Asagaya jazz bar at night — warm light, record shelves, and jazz posters

Asagaya

The quiet one, and Tokyo’s jazz-bar neighborhood: small, intimate places where you’re close enough to feel like part of the session.

Start with: Pearl Center arcade → one of the tiny jazz bars around Star Road → Asagaya Shinmeigu Shrine if you want the calm version.

Field notes

The regular spots

My personal lists — kissaten, jazz bars, restaurants and parks I'd actually vouch for — now live as labeled field notes on each neighborhood page.
